Elephant in the Room

About

ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM is a collective of Toronto artists who are caregivers to family members, partners, and the community at large.

Mandate

We create experiential, collaborative works to:

  • Bring visibility to the hidden labour of caregiving
  • Highlight society’s lack of value for the unwell and the aging
  • Explore social issues that affect caring in crisis
  • Share the ways that caregiving impacts a caregiver's day-to-day life

Inspired by General Idea’s AIDS art projects and the BLM art activism movement, our aim is to engage with everyday people, health-care providers, the arts community, and social justice workers through pop-up exhibitions, public works, and collaboration with other artists.

History

Launched in 2022, the core collective is comprised of visual, performance, and media artists:

  • Brenda Joy Lem
  • Charmaine Lurch
  • docuvixen
  • Gareth Bate
